Google Is Bringing Gemini in Classroom to K–12 Students of All Ages
Google’s Gemini is moving further into the classroom, and this time the change includes students under 18.
Starting August 10 on the web and August 17 on mobile, Google began expanding Gemini in Google Classroom to K–12 and higher-education students of all ages. The feature gives students a Gemini tab inside Classroom where they can use class materials to create things such as flashcards, practice quizzes, study guides, and other learning aids.
There is an important qualifier: this is not Google simply handing every child with a school account an unrestricted chatbot. Access is controlled by the school’s Google Workspace administrator. Google says the Gemini in Classroom control is on by default for teachers and students of all ages, but if a school has already turned student access off, it stays off. Schools can decide who is allowed to use the service.
The new tools can also use actual Classroom context. A student can select a class and assignment, and Gemini can incorporate the assignment instructions and curriculum materials into the prompt. That makes the tool potentially much more useful than asking a general-purpose chatbot to explain something with no idea what the student is actually studying.
It also makes the questions around classroom AI harder to dodge. Is the tool helping a student understand the material, or doing the intellectual work for them? When should AI assistance be cited? What should teachers consider acceptable on homework? And how do parents even know which AI features their child’s school has enabled?
Schools are already answering those questions very differently. Axios recently reported that some Colorado districts are actively teaching students to use AI, while others place tighter restrictions on younger students. There is no single settled model for this yet, which is probably appropriate. A second grader and a high-school senior do not have the same educational needs, and “AI in school” is too broad a phrase to be a useful policy by itself.
Google itself warns users to review generated material because AI can make mistakes. That is a welcome bit of fine print to put front and center with students. A system that can produce a polished study guide can also produce a polished wrong answer.
For schools, the immediate job is not to either embrace AI everywhere or ban it everywhere. It is to know what is enabled, decide where it actually helps learning, establish clear rules for students and teachers, and make sure parents understand what tools are being used. For families, this is another reason to ask what the school’s AI policy actually says rather than assuming “Google Classroom” still means what it meant a few years ago.
