Government Credentials Available for Purchase
Government logins from more than 40,000 users have been stolen from more than 30 countries. These accounts were discovered for sale on black market sites, and they ranged from local government to federal sites.
While this won’t affect most of my readers, I’m posting this, because it’s important to remember, no matter what your job function security is critical.
Apple Watch Updates
Apple Watch’s electrocardiogram (ECG) feature has recently been approved by the FDA. An ECG measures the electrical activity of your heart, recording its rhythm and activity to determine whether or not your heart is operating normally.
According to this article, there’s at least one user who has already been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after discovering something was wrong using their Apple watch.
Hospitals Ripe For Scams
Hospitals are already high value targets. They are required to keep data safe and many are highly profitable. Combine this with staff that can be careless due to long hours and overwork, or staff that might not be as tech savvy as they need to be, and you have created the perfect storm for a ransomware attack.
This is going to be exacerbated in the coming years by an influx of inexpensive connected devices and a projected yearly revenue of $5.5 trillion for the US healthcare industry alone.
Moving forward, security needs to be a priority for medical providers, not an afterthought. It’s not just security to keep our identities safe, but keeping us from physical harm as well. Imagine a ransomware attack that can shut down internet connected life support devices.
My proposal would be a non-governmental organization of information security professionals with a background in the medical field. This organization could create standards and monitor and report on breaches and attacks nationwide. A unified front to protect our health.
